The Dave Goldberg/ Duane Allen Quartet is based on 1950's and 1960's bebop and modern jazz. By working together Dave Goldberg and Duane Allen have formed a unique partnership, which has allowed them to focus on original compositions as well as the traditional jazz standards. For the past fourteen years Goldberg and Allen have performed throughout the entire South Florida and Los Angeles areas to critical acclaim. Jazz writer Matt Schudel of the Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel writes, "Dave Goldberg and Duane Allen play solid, bop influenced jazz the way it's supposed to be done."
In 1993 saxophonist Dave Goldberg graduated from Florida State University with a B.A. in Jazz Studies. He has performed with notable musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Ira Sullivan, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Marcus Roberts, Roy Hargrove, Gene Bertoncini, Adam Nussbaum, and Marcus Printup. Dave Goldberg has led successful jazz groups in the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area, New York City, and now Los Angeles. He has also been featured in various jazz magazines and publications. A recent review in Jazz Times Magazine had this to say about him…”Goldberg, displays a strong and assured tone and a maturity of style, rooted in swinging mainstream modern jazz.”
Guitarist Duane Allen graduated in 1996 from Florida International University with a B.A. in Music Education. He has played with top jazz musicians such as Ira Sullivan, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Arturo Sandoval, Kevin Mahogany, Adam Nussbaum, Mike Gerber, Duffy Jackson, Turk Mauro, and John Bunch. After attending one of Duane Allen's performances, the Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel gave him an outstanding review. "Allen's guitar shimmers with original chords and tasty single-note solos, somewhat in the style of jazz giant Jim Hall." Duane is known for having a very original style, blending elements of Thelonious Monk and Herbie Hancock with the blues-like quality of Wes Montgomery or Kenny Burrell. For the past six years Duane has also been leading his own jazz trio in Los Angeles. This Trio is featured on Duane Allen's 2004 CD release "Yin-Yang."
Dave Goldberg and Duane Allen currently have five CD releases under their own names on Tritone Records. The CDs have drawn praise from Jazz Times Magazine and other international publications. Their 2nd CD – “When Time Approaches” was the winner of the 2001 City Link Best of Jazz Award. Matt Schudel - jazz writer for the Sun Sentinel says "When Time Approaches is an excellent effort in every way" with "original music in the finest sense". Goldberg’s 3rd release – “Surreality” was described by LA. Jazz Scene as “the future of jazz without digging up all the roots.” The Dave Goldberg/ Duane Allen Quartet has been receiving extensive radio airplay along with these rave reviews. Goldberg and Allen's newest 2007 release entitled “The Path You Choose” features four original compositions and some interesting jazz versions of songs by Bjork, Coldplay, and the Beatles. They believe it is their finest work yet to date and look forward to sharing it with the jazz community in 2007.
